Becoming an author
For readers and authorsUpdated 1 min read
A reader account becomes an author account from For authors: choose a pen name, add a short bio, and Studio opens. Your library, reviews and follows come with you; the reader-only surfaces close, and the change cannot be undone from the product.
The short answer

From reader to author
An account is one role, reader or author (Reader or author?). A reader can become an author later:
- Open For authors while signed in and press Become an author.
- Enter the pen name readers will see on your books (2 to 60 characters) and, optionally, a short bio.
- Press Create my pen name. The page says You're an author now: your pen name is live and Studio is open.
Your library, reviews, follows and Circles come with you. Studio opens with your catalog, series, campaigns, the Journal, promotions, analytics and settings. The reader-only surfaces (Reading Life posting, goals, insights and wraps) close, because an author account does not have them.
It cannot be reversed
There is no path back to a reader account in the product, and the Terms allow one account per person, so a second account is not the answer either. If you upgraded by mistake, contact support from the account and say so; a person will look at it.

- Reader and author accounts: An account is either a reader account or an author account. You choose at sign-up; a reader can become an author later from For authors, which keeps the library and reviews and cannot be undone.
- Your pen name and public page: Your pen name is your public identity; books, series, campaigns and Journal entries attach to it. Edit its name, bios, avatar, banner, the genres you write, the languages you publish in and external links under Studio, Settings. Several pen names per account from Studio, Pen names: add, open in Studio, make primary, archive; Author and Creator one, Pro up to five, Publisher unlimited.
- Publishing your first book: Create a book from Studio, Books, New book, with its synopsis, up to three genres and six tropes, content level and warnings, language, page count and a cover (uploaded, or a pattern with the title drawn on). It starts as a draft only you can see; set it to Coming soon (with a date) or Published when ready. Add a sample and buy links from the edit page; archiving takes it off the catalog without deleting anything.
- Deleting your account: Settings › Account › Delete account asks for your password and your username (an account made with Google emails you a link instead), hides your profile, posts, reviews and comments at once and logs you out on every device; we email you the deletion date and a Keep my account button. After 30 days the account is permanently deleted, with the rows tied to it, your files and the log of emails sent to your address.
