Kindle Unlimited, KDP Select and advance copies
For authorsUpdated 2 min read
If your ebook is enrolled in KDP Select, and so in Kindle Unlimited, Amazon's own terms decide what you may do with it, and Booklabria does not interpret them. Their exclusivity section covers selling or distributing the digital book elsewhere and says nothing about review copies either way. What Booklabria does is hand one reader a protected copy, for a review or as a gift, and never as a sale.
The short answer
What Amazon's terms say
While an ebook is enrolled in KDP Select, and so in Kindle Unlimited, Amazon's terms decide what you may do with it. Those terms are Amazon's to read, not ours.
The exclusivity section of Amazon's KDP Select terms says that while the book is enrolled, you may not "sell or distribute" it, or let anyone else do so, "in digital format" anywhere else. The terms do not mention review copies or advance copies, in either direction.
Read them yourself before you send copies of an enrolled book:
- KDP Select, Amazon's page for the program
- Kindle Direct Publishing Terms and Conditions, where the KDP Select terms sit
If you are unsure how they apply to your book, KDP Support can tell you. Booklabria cannot, and does not promise that any copy sent from here sits outside them.
What Booklabria does
- A protected copy, to one reader at a time. A campaign, a certified send or a delivery link gives each reader their own copy, the way you chose: read on Booklabria, where the file stays on the server and the copy is watermarked to that reader, a protected download, watermarked, with a link that lasts fifteen minutes and five downloads per copy, or Send to Kindle, where we e-mail the watermarked EPUB to that reader's own Kindle address, five sends per copy (ARC delivery and tracking). Send to Kindle goes through Amazon's own service, so the same caution applies: Booklabria does not promise it sits outside Amazon's terms.
- Never a sale. No reader pays for a copy, and Booklabria is not a store: there is no checkout for books here.
- On your dates. A campaign runs between the dates you set. A delivery link can be revoked, which stops new claims; copies already claimed stay readable.
A copy being protected, or free, does not change whether it is a digital copy under Amazon's terms. Make that call with the terms in front of you. If your book is enrolled and you would rather not decide, send advance copies before you enroll it, or after it leaves the program.
Where this lives
Related
- Running an ARC campaign: Studio, Campaigns, New campaign walks through the book, dates and reader spots, ideal readers (genres, tropes, languages, regions, requirements), delivery (formats, files, your message) and how to launch (draft, scheduled, or now). Applications gather under Applications with each reader's match and reliability; approve or decline one by one or in batches, and every decision notifies the reader.
- Delivery links, codes and certified sends: a protected copy to your own readers: A delivery link (or its QR code) hands a protected copy of your book to readers you already have, outside any campaign and with no review owed, on the Creator plan and above. From Studio, Advance copies, Deliver to your readers: choose the book, how readers get it (read on Booklabria, a protected download, Send to Kindle, or a choice of them), how many copies, how long the link accepts claims, an optional password, who can claim, and a note. Revoking stops new claims only; claimed copies stay readable and count toward the readers your plan allows. A campaign can also send certified copies to addresses you know; a send counts as a reader once it is claimed.
- ARC delivery and tracking: You choose per campaign how readers receive the book: Read on Booklabria (the file stays on the server, readers open it on the site or in the app, and the Reading tab shows progress by chapter, who finished and where readers stop, as counts), a Protected download (signed links that expire after fifteen minutes, five downloads per approval, every EPUB watermarked) or Send to Kindle (we e-mail the watermarked EPUB to the reader's own Kindle address, five sends per approval). Tick one or more; with two or more, each approved reader picks one. Upload the EPUB or PDF on the Delivery tab; reading on Booklabria and Send to Kindle need the EPUB. The Activity tab notes approvals, downloads and reviews as they happen; the analytics funnel shows how many downloads became reviews.
