Following, and what you are told
For readers and authorsUpdated 2 min read
Follow authors (their pen name), readers and series; their news reaches your feed and the bell, grouped and switchable per author. Notifications live under the bell, everything can be marked read at once, and e-mail is a digest, never one message per event.
The short answer
Following
- Authors: Follow on an author's page follows their pen name (while the author has an early-copy campaign open, Request early copy takes the main button and Follow sits beside it). Their Journal entries and announcements reach your Following feed, and the alerts you choose reach the bell.
- Readers: Follow on a reader's profile; their public Reading Life posts reach your feed.
- Series: Follow on a series page tells you when its next book is published.
Following on the same button unfollows. Who follows you, and whom you follow, is a part of your profile with its own visibility (Who sees what).
Alerts per author
For each author you follow, Settings › Notifications › Authors you follow lets you choose what to be told about: New releases, Preorders, Early copies, Deals, Series updates, Events, Journal posts, Chart moves. Switch off what you do not want without unfollowing.
The bell
Notifications live under the bell in the top bar, in four categories (Social, Books, Early copies, Account). Repeats are grouped ("three people reacted…"), everything can be marked read at once, and each category can be switched off per channel under Settings › Notifications. E-mail, when it is on, is a digest (daily or weekly, your choice), never one e-mail per like or follow; early copy and account e-mails arrive at once. See Notifications.
The author's letters in your inbox
Following never gives an author your e-mail address. If you also want their letters by e-mail, that is a separate checkbox beside Follow, Also send me the author's letters by e-mail. The author can export your e-mail address. Tick it and the letters arrive as full e-mails; unsubscribe from any letter in one click. See An author's letters by e-mail and Sharing your e-mail with an author.
Where this lives
Related
- Notifications: in-app, e-mail, push and the digest: Four categories (Social, Books, Early copies, Account), three channels (in-app, e-mail, push), an e-mail digest that is off, daily or weekly, per-author alerts for the people you follow, and a timezone. Nothing is ever sent one e-mail per like.
- Reading Life posts: The composer at the top of Home posts a reading moment to your profile and your followers' feeds (started, finished, progress, a recommendation, a question, a poll and twenty more formats), each with an audience: Public, Followers or Only me. Edit or delete yours from the ⋯ menu.
- Who sees what: profile visibility: Settings › Privacy sets your whole profile to public, followers only or private, and your library, reading progress, activity and follower list each on their own. Your follow-through is a fifth setting: by default only the authors you request a copy from see it. Author pages are public by nature; what an author keeps private is the library and activity.
- Sharing your e-mail with an author: An author never gets your e-mail address from a follow, a request or a review. The one way is the checkbox beside Follow, "Also send me the author's letters by e-mail. The author can export your e-mail address." Tick it and the author's letters arrive in your inbox and your address is in the author's export; unsubscribe from any letter in one click, or under Settings › Notifications, and the next export leaves you out.
