Sharing your e-mail with an author
For readersUpdated 2 min read
An author never gets your e-mail address from a follow, a request or a review. The one way is the checkbox beside Follow, "Also send me the author's letters by e-mail. The author can export your e-mail address." Tick it and the author's letters arrive in your inbox and your address is in the author's export; unsubscribe from any letter in one click, or under Settings › Notifications, and the next export leaves you out.
The short answer
The one way an author gets your address
Following an author shows their Journal in your feed and gives the author a number: one more follower. Your early copy applications, reviews, shelves and comments never hand an author your address either. The one way is a checkbox, beside Follow on the author's page, in the follow sheet, and under every letter of theirs on the site, always in the same words:
Also send me the author's letters by e-mail. The author can export your e-mail address.
Ticking it does two things and nothing else: the author's letters arrive in your inbox as full e-mails (An author's letters by e-mail), and your address is in the export that author can take. It is unticked until you tick it, per author, and the sheet shows which address it would use (the one on your account; change it under Settings › Account).
What the author gets
- Your e-mail address, in a file the author can download at any time from Studio › Readers › Mailing list, together with everyone else who ticked the box. Each row carries the address, the day you subscribed, the words you agreed to, and the export's own id, so a consent can always be shown and a leaked file traced.
- Counts, never who: how many subscribers opened a letter and how many read it on Booklabria. There is no per-reader list and no click tracking.
- Nothing about your reading, your shelves or your requests. The file holds addresses and dates, not what you read.
What the author does with the file outside Booklabria is theirs to answer for; the Terms forbid selling it, and every letter they send through Booklabria carries your unsubscribe link.
Withdrawing
- From any letter: the Unsubscribe link at the foot, one click, no login. From that moment the author's next export leaves you out; you keep following unless you unfollow as well.
- From Settings: Settings › Notifications › Letters by e-mail lists every author you subscribed to, one row each, with the day you ticked the box. Turn a row off and it is the same as the link.
- On the author's page: untick the box under Following.
Withdrawing keeps a record that you had agreed and when you withdrew, so the question can always be answered. Mail an author already sent from their own tools, using an earlier export, is theirs to stop; the e-mail itself will say how.
If you agreed before letters existed
Readers who pressed Let the author e-mail me in the beta and confirmed from their inbox are subscribers now: the same consent, given with more steps, so nothing was lost. Those rows appear under Settings › Notifications like any other, and one click turns them off.
Where this lives
Related
- An author's letters by e-mail: subscribing, replying, unsubscribing: Following an author puts their Journal in your feed. Subscribing sends you their letters as full e-mails as well, with the author's name and mark and one button back to the letter on Booklabria, where you answer it in the comments. Subscribing is one explicit checkbox per author that says the author can export your e-mail address; unsubscribe is one click in every letter, and from then on the author's export leaves you out. Followers who never ticked the box are never exported.
- Notifications: in-app, e-mail, push and the digest: Four categories (Social, Books, Early copies, Account), three channels (in-app, e-mail, push), an e-mail digest that is off, daily or weekly, per-author alerts for the people you follow, and a timezone. Nothing is ever sent one e-mail per like.
- Who sees what: profile visibility: Settings › Privacy sets your whole profile to public, followers only or private, and your library, reading progress, activity and follower list each on their own. Your follow-through is a fifth setting: by default only the authors you request a copy from see it. Author pages are public by nature; what an author keeps private is the library and activity.
- Following, and what you are told: Follow authors (their pen name), readers and series; their news reaches your feed and the bell, grouped and switchable per author. Notifications live under the bell, everything can be marked read at once, and e-mail is a digest, never one message per event.
