Follow authors (their pen name), readers and series; their news reaches your feed and the bell, grouped and switchable per author. Notifications live under the bell, everything can be marked read at once, and e-mail is a digest, never one message per event.
The short answer
Following
- Authors: Follow on an author's page follows their pen name (while the author has an ARC campaign open, Request ARC takes the main button and Follow sits beside it). Their Journal entries and announcements reach your Following feed, and the alerts you choose reach the bell.
- Readers: Follow on a reader's profile; their public Reading Life posts reach your feed.
- Series: Follow on a series page tells you when its next book is published.
Following on the same button unfollows. Who follows you, and whom you follow, is a part of your profile with its own visibility (Who sees what).
Alerts per author
For each author you follow, Settings › Notifications › Authors you follow lets you choose what to be told about: New releases, Preorders, ARC copies, Deals, Series updates, Events, Journal posts, Chart moves. Switch off what you do not want without unfollowing.
The bell
Notifications live under the bell in the top bar, in four categories (Social, Books, ARC, Account). Repeats are grouped ("three people reacted…"), everything can be marked read at once, and each category can be switched off per channel under Settings › Notifications. E-mail, when it is on, is a digest (daily or weekly, your choice), never one e-mail per like or follow; ARC and account e-mails arrive at once. See Notifications.
Hearing from an author off the platform
Following never gives an author your e-mail address. If you want an author to be able to write to you, that is a separate, explicit choice on their page: see Sharing your e-mail with an author.

- Sharing your e-mail with an author: On an author's page you can let that author e-mail you: a dialog shows the exact words, a confirmation e-mail seals it, the author only ever gets an export of confirmed addresses, and you can withdraw at any time under Settings › Notifications.
