Motion, contrast and text size
For readers and authorsUpdated 1 min read
Reduced motion from your device settings is respected everywhere (animations become fades or stop); text contrast meets AA on every theme, including the darker Profile Studio and Circle themes, and color never carries meaning alone; browser zoom and large text up to 200 percent reflow on a phone with nothing off-screen. There is no app-wide text-size or dark-mode switch; use your device's. In the reader, Aa sets a book's font, size, spacing, margins and page color, and your choice follows you to every book.
The short answer
Motion
If your device or browser asks for reduced motion, Booklabria's animations are shortened to fades or removed, everywhere, with nothing to switch on in the app. Ordinary motion is short (under a quarter of a second) and nothing flashes.
Contrast and color
Text contrast meets AA on every surface, including the darker themes a reader can choose for their profile in Profile Studio and the themes a Circle owner can publish. Color never carries meaning alone: a state always has a word or a shape beside it (a filled dot and a label, an icon and its name).
There is no app-wide dark mode switch in the beta; the themes are per profile and per Circle.
Text size and zoom
In the reader (an early copy, a sample or a story), Aa at the top sets the book's font (including Atkinson Hyperlegible, whose letters are hard to confuse), its size, line spacing, margins and page color (White, Sepia or Dark). Your settings follow you to every book and device.
Everywhere else, use your browser's zoom or your device's large-text setting. At 200 percent on a phone, rows wrap, dialogs scroll and nothing runs off the screen. If a page still scrolls sideways at large text, tell us which one (send it to the team); that is a defect, not a limitation. The installed app (Installing the app) follows the same device settings.
Where this lives
Related
- Using Booklabria with a keyboard or a screen reader: Built to WCAG 2.2 AA. Tab reaches every control with a visible focus ring, Enter or Space operates it, Skip to content sits at the top of every page, dialogs trap focus and return it, menus and lists carry their roles, and standalone icons carry a name. A control that fails from the keyboard or is announced wrongly is a bug to report with the page and the control.
- Your profile's look: Profile Studio, themes and dark mode: Profile Studio (Settings › Profile › Studio) sets your profile's theme, accent, layout and banner and the order of its modules, with a preview at phone and desktop width; nothing changes for visitors until you publish. Light and dark follow your system.
- Installing the app on your phone: Booklabria is installable from the browser (Add to Home Screen on iPhone and iPad; Install from the address bar or menu elsewhere) and can send push notifications where the deployment supports them. Native iOS and Android apps are on the way, with no date.
