Using Booklabria with a keyboard or a screen reader
For readers and authorsUpdated 1 min read
Built to WCAG 2.2 AA. Tab reaches every control with a visible focus ring, Enter or Space operates it, Skip to content sits at the top of every page, dialogs trap focus and return it, menus and lists carry their roles, and standalone icons carry a name. A control that fails from the keyboard or is announced wrongly is a bug to report with the page and the control.
The short answer
What to expect
Booklabria is built to WCAG 2.2 AA:
- Keyboard: every control is reachable with Tab (Shift+Tab backwards) and operated with Enter or Space; focus is always visible. A Skip to content link is the first thing on every page.
- Dialogs and menus: a dialog keeps focus inside it, Escape closes it, and focus returns to what opened it. Menus, tabs and lists use their proper roles, so a screen reader announces them as such.
- Structure: landmarks (header, navigation, main, footer) and heading order are kept on every page, so you can jump by landmark or heading.
- Labels: every field has a label; an icon that stands alone (a bell, a search glass, a menu) carries a name. Nothing is signaled by color alone.
- Reading: long text (help articles, policies, book synopses, Journal entries) is ordinary marked-up text, not images of text.
The Help Center itself follows the same rules: the search box is labeled, the table of contents is a navigation landmark, and "On this page" links to real headings.
If something does not work
A control that cannot be reached or used from the keyboard, or that is announced wrongly, is a defect we want to hear about. Send it to the team with the page address, which control, and the browser and assistive technology you use (for example "Safari with VoiceOver on iPhone"). The report reaches a person.
Where this lives
Related
- Motion, contrast and text size: Reduced motion from your device settings is respected everywhere (animations become fades or stop); text contrast meets AA on every theme, including the darker Profile Studio and Circle themes, and color never carries meaning alone; browser zoom and large text up to 200 percent reflow on a phone with nothing off-screen. There is no app-wide text-size or dark-mode switch; use your device's. In the reader, Aa sets a book's font, size, spacing, margins and page color, and your choice follows you to every book.
- A download or a page is not working: An early copy link that stopped working expired after fifteen minutes; ask for a fresh one from My early copies. A page that says Something went wrong keeps what you wrote; try again, then use Get help, which opens the contact form with the page and a reference filled in. This page has wandered off means a mistyped, moved or unpublished link. You're offline means the app needs a connection; your shelves and notes are safe.
- Installing the app on your phone: Booklabria is installable from the browser (Add to Home Screen on iPhone and iPad; Install from the address bar or menu elsewhere) and can send push notifications where the deployment supports them. Native iOS and Android apps are on the way, with no date.
