Content warnings and content levels

Authors tag a book with content warnings from a shared list and a content level; both show on the book page. Anything you asked to avoid is kept out of your recommendations and opens marked where it appears, never silently hidden from search.
The short answer
On a book
An author tags a book with content warnings from a shared vocabulary (so "self-harm" means the same thing on every book, rather than whatever words each author chose) and a content level. Both are shown on the book page, under the description, before you shelve it.
What you avoid
Under Settings › Profile › Content you'd rather avoid, tick the topics you would rather not meet, and add anything else in your own words. Then:
- books carrying one of them are kept out of your recommendations (Discover, For You, ARC opportunities);
- when such a book turns up elsewhere (search, an author's page, a Circle's reading list), its content notes open with the match marked, so you know why it looks the way it does;
- nothing is hidden from search or from an author's page: you can always go and find a book on purpose.

A warning that is missing or wrong
Use Report on the book (Explicit content for material that is unmarked); a moderator looks at the book and its tags. Authors: the guidelines ask for warnings where a book needs them (Community guidelines).
